Omaha Public Power District distributed nearly $33.9 million on Monday for in-lieu-of-tax payments to 11 southeast Nebraska counties.

"Payment in lieu of taxes is one way we, as a public power utility, can give back to our customer-owners and contribute to our communities," said OPPD Board Chair Anne McGuire. "We're proud of these contributions. And we know that they'll be put to good use within the counties we serve."

In-lieu-of-tax payment amounts are based on 5 percent of OPPD's gross revenues from the previous year's retail electricity sales in incorporated cities and towns. They take the place of property taxes. County treasurers distribute the funds to school districts, cities and other entities to fund services and improvements.
In addition to in-lieu-of-tax payments, the district pays general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, motor vehicle license fees and permit fees like any other business.

Below are the payments (rounded to the nearest dollar) made to each county:

Douglas: $27,242,075

Sarpy: $5,112,950

Washington: $667,349

Saunders: $325,476

Cass: $287,928
Dodge: $142,633

Nemaha: $40,228

Johnson: $15,240

Richardson: $14,549

Otoe: $4,406

Colfax: $4,128
