OGALLALA, Neb. — A winter weather advisory has been issued for much of western and north-central Nebraska as mixed precipitation, snow and gusty winds move into the region late Thursday night.

The National Weather Service in North Platte said the advisory will be in effect from midnight CST (11 p.m. MST) Thursday through noon CST (11 a.m. MST) Saturday.

Forecasters expect mixed precipitation with total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. A light glaze of ice could also develop before rain transitions to snow.

Winds could gust as high as 45 mph, which may lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The advisory covers portions of the Nebraska Panhandle, Sandhills and north-central Nebraska, including Ogallala, Chappell, Big Springs, Lewellen, Oshkosh, Paxton, Rushville, Gordon, Valentine, Mullen, Hyannis, Arthur and Thedford.

Officials warn that roads could become slick and hazardous, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow combined with heavier snowfall rates may also reduce visibility at times.

Thunderstorms are also possible across parts of central and north-central Nebraska Thursday evening, with hail being the primary concern in stronger storms.

Travelers are urged to slow down and use caution while driving.
