Press release

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen on Thursday sent information from the state’s voter registration list to the U.S. Department of Justice in response to a September request.

The data, transmitted at 5 p.m., included 1,254,333 eligible voters as of Feb. 12. According to Evnen’s office, the DOJ requested publicly available voter registration information along with full dates of birth and either the last four digits of Social Security numbers — verified for about 99% of voters — or driver’s license or state ID numbers when a Social Security number was not verified.

Party affiliation, voter history, maiden names, places of birth and contact information were not included in the transfer.

The DOJ said it is reviewing the list to assess Nebraska’s compliance with federal voter list maintenance requirements.

A lawsuit filed in September sought to block the disclosure. The case was dismissed Feb. 6. The Nebraska Supreme Court denied a motion Wednesday to prevent the release while an appeal is pending, allowing the information to be sent as previously scheduled.
