BIG SPRINGS, Neb. — A grass fire west of Big Springs early Sunday underscored the ongoing fire danger across western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming as critical fire weather conditions persist.

Big Springs Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a grass fire at approximately 12:55 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8. The fire was reported west of town and occurred amid extremely dry conditions and gusty winds.

Fire officials used the incident to remind residents to exercise caution in wildland areas. Officials warned that dragging trailer chains, outdoor sparks or other ignition sources can quickly lead to fast-moving fires under current conditions.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning covering much of western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming, including the southern Nebraska Panhandle. The warning remains in effect through at least Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, conditions include west to northwest winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, relative humidity as low as 13 percent and warm temperatures. Forecasters warned that any fires that start could spread rapidly and be difficult to control.

High wind gusts exceeding 60 mph are also possible along Interstate 25 and Interstate 80 corridors, further increasing the risk for extreme fire behavior.

Outdoor burning is not recommended during Red Flag Warning conditions. Fire officials urge residents to secure chains, avoid activities that could create sparks and report any signs of fire immediately.

Although chances for precipitation may improve later in the week, temperatures are expected to remain above normal, keeping fire danger elevated.
