Grass fire at Logan County Shooting Sports Complex burns more than 200 acres before containment
STERLING, Colo. — Firefighters from multiple agencies contained a large grass fire Friday afternoon at the Logan County Shooting Sports Complex near Sterling, after winds and challenging terrain fueled rapid fire growth.
According to the Sterling Fire Department, an off-duty firefighter reported the fire at 1:33 p.m. Duty crews from Station 1 responded, and the call was quickly upgraded to a general alarm with countywide mutual aid requested, including assistance from Haxtun and New Raymer/Stoneham fire departments.
Upon arrival, crews found a fast-moving, wind-driven grass fire estimated at approximately two acres near the rifle range. Shifting winds and strong gusts caused repeated flare-ups, reigniting the fire line as firefighters worked the flanks. Sandy terrain in the area complicated access, with several units requiring assistance from a county road grader after becoming stuck.
As additional mutual aid arrived, command added resources to the fire’s flanks, allowing crews to access the head of the fire as it burned east toward County Road 47. A single-engine air tanker was also deployed and made multiple drops on the head of the fire, helping slow its advance and allowing ground crews to gain control.
Command declared the fire contained at 3:15 p.m. Crews remained on scene conducting mop-up operations and strengthening containment lines with the assistance of a tractor and disc.
The fire is estimated to have burned more than 200 acres. No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire has not been released.
Fire officials credited coordinated efforts among county and mutual-aid agencies for preventing further spread and limiting damage.
