Sterling police report busy week
STERLING, Colo. - The Sterling Police Department reported a busy week of activity that included multiple stolen vehicle cases and a DUI arrest following a crash involving law enforcement vehicles.
Around 8:25 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 400 block of MacGregor Road. Police quickly searched the area, located the vehicle unoccupied and returned it safely to its owner. Officers and detectives continue to investigate the incident. Police reminded residents to lock vehicles and avoid leaving keys inside.
On Thursday afternoon, officers were participating in a Colorado State Patrol BATTLE (Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement) task force operation when they received a report of a vehicle theft in progress at Broadway Plaza around 1:30 p.m. With officers already in the area and assistance from a reporting party, police located the suspect vehicle and conducted a high-risk stop in the 12000 block of County Road 37. The suspect was taken into custody and is expected to be transported to the Logan County Jail on multiple felony charges, including motor vehicle theft. Investigators believe the suspect may be connected to additional attempted vehicle thefts. Police noted all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
In a separate incident, Sterling officers arrested a driver for DUI after a crash involving Logan County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicles. Deputies were concluding a drug-related traffic stop in the 100 block of North Third Avenue when a driver struck marked patrol vehicles with emergency lights activated, sideswiping a K9 unit and rear-ending another SUV. No serious injuries were reported.
