Home Instead program fights senior loneliness with gifts and visits
Norfolk, Neb. -- From a humble idea, a simple act of kindness now sparks joy for countless seniors.
Home Instead's "Be a Santa to a Senior" program provides the warmth of connection this Christmas, as a senior experiencing isolation has their wish granted.
Home Instead receives referrals through community members, such as healthcare providers or neighbors. Once referrals are submitted, Home Instead "Be a Santa To a Senior" Program Coordinator Kiara Krusemark creates tags that are placed on a tree located in the mall and in front of the store, Created Nebraska.
Now in its 12th year, the program is making even bigger waves in the fight against senior loneliness, surpassing last year's gift total and drawing more attention than ever with more than 230 gifts delivered to seniors.
From cozy blankets and games to hygiene products and electric pianos, Home Instead organizers express the joy it brings not only to the seniors but especially to their hearts.
"It's their one gift that they get to open over the holidays," said Home Instead Franchise Owner Andrea Trautman. "It means so much to them. So, to hear that heartfelt gratitude shows how very important this program is to so many people."
"I just love it for so many reasons," said Krusemark. "The gift is just an added bonus, but I think just being able to visit with these people is the best part for them and us."
