Kearney honors longtime firefighter Terry Eirich with full fire-service funeral
KEARNEY, Neb. — Kearney firefighters, city leaders and residents gathered Tuesday to honor the life of longtime firefighter Terry Eirich, who died earlier this month following a cancer diagnosis.
Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church, followed by a full fire-service procession through Kearney.
Fire departments from across the region participated in the tribute.
Eirich served the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years, holding leadership roles including Captain, Assistant Chief and Fire Chief. He most recently worked as Fire Inspector for the City of Kearney.
The department says Eirich's cancer is considered presumptive, a designation that recognizes the elevated cancer risk faced by firefighters.
In honor of his service Mayor Jonathan Nikkila ordered flags at all city buildings to fly at half-staff through December 16.
City officials and fellow firefighters say Eirich leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service and dedication to the Kearney community.
