Husker notes: Rienk Mast hits 7 3s, scores 31 to help Nebraska beat Winthrop 80-73, remain undefeated
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rienk Mast hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting Tuesday night to help Nebraska beat Winthrop 80-73 and remain undefeated.
Nebraska (7-0) has won 11 games in a row, dating to last season, the longest active streak of its kind in Division I and just the fourth time in program history that the Cornhuskers have accomplished the feat (1993-94, 1990-01 and 2010-11).
Kareem Rozier hit a 3-pointer that trimmed Winthrop's deficit to 72-69 with 1:45 to play, but Pryce Sandfort answered with a jumper and and Cale Jacobsen added a layup to push the lead to seven points with 47 seconds remaining.
Jacobsen and Braden Frager each scored 11 points and Sandfort added 10 points and eight assists for Nebraska.
Kareem Rozier led Winthrop (3-4) with 14 points, Daylen Berry added 12 and Pharell Boyogueno scored 11. Logan Duncomb fouled out in the final seconds with 10 rebounds and eight points.
Nebraska, which went into the game leading the Big Ten and No. 20 nationally in made 3s per game (11.5), made 13 3-pointers.
Sandfort hit a 3-pointer and Jacobsen followed with a three-point play to make it 47-42 with 15:07 left in the game and the Cornhuskers led the rest of the way. Mast scored Nebraska's final 13 points — including three 3s — in a 15-5 run that made it 67-54 with 5:35 to play.
Huskers Hold Off Hoos for Emerald Coast Classic Title
Niceville, Fla. - Britt Prince scored 30 points for the second time in the last three games to capture tournament MVP honors while leading Nebraska to the Emerald Coast Classic Beach Bracket Championship with a 91-82 women's basketball win over Virginia at Raider Arena on Tuesday night.
The Huskers improved to 7-0 by scoring 91 points against the nation's No. 1 scoring defense, as the Cavaliers entered the game allowing just 45.5 points per game. Virginia slipped to 5-2.
Sophomore Amiah Hargrove joined Prince on the all-tournament team with 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds against the nation's No. 1 team in rebound margin entering the contest. With the 6-2 forward leading the way, Nebraska outworked the Hoos on the glass, 37-29, and turned 16 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points.
Callin Hake, Jessica Petrie and Hailey Weaver all pitched in 11 points in the victory to complete five Huskers in double figures. Eliza Maupin also played big minutes with six points, four rebounds and two steals, while Petra Bozan and Kennedi Williams both made key plays late to help the Huskers hold on for the win.
Nebraska built a 19-point lead at 69-50 at the end of three quarters and then withstood a furious rally led by Virginia All-America point guard Kymora Johnson. The first-team All-ACC guard scored 15 in the fourth quarter and 22 in the second half to help Virginia close within four points with 2:40 left.
Johnson added six assists, six rebounds and three steals but committed eight turnovers in the loss.
Prince was the best player in the gym both days in Niceville, hitting 12-of-17 shots on Tuesday, including 2-of-3 three-point tries. Her three-pointer with 1:22 left provided the dagger in the victory. She added six assists, three rebounds and a steal in a winning effort.
Prince averaged 24 points and 6.5 assists while hitting 20-of-31 shots in the tournament.
Nebraska hit 50.8 percent (30-59) of its shots for the game, including 8-of-19 three-pointers (.421), while hitting 23-of-31 free throws (.742). Virginia finished at 50 percent (25-50) on the night, including 10-of-21 threes, including 5-of-7 in the fourth quarter. The Cavs were 22-of-33 at the foul line.
In an entertaining first half, Nebraska fell behind 12-7 in the first five minutes before responding with a 9-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. Hake, Maupin, Hargrove and Williams each hit field goals during the run to help the Big Red take an 18-16 edge at the end of the first quarter.
The Huskers kept the lead the rest of the half building an 11-point margin late in the second quarter on a Prince jumper with 55 seconds left, before settling for a 42-33 halftime advantage.
Prince dominated the half with 18 points in the opening 20 minutes, while adding two rebounds. She hit 8-of-10 shots in the half, including her lone three-point attempt. She outscored Virginia All-American and first-team All-ACC point guard Kymora Johnson 18-2 in the half, with Johnson getting just two free throws late in the half.
Hargrove added eight big points and four rebounds off the bench in the half, while Petrie contributed seven first-half points.
As a team, Nebraska hit 50 percent (16-32) of its shots from the floor, including 3-of-9 threes, while sinking 7-of-10 free throws. The Huskers also claimed a plus-four edge on the glass against the nation's No. 1 rebounding team.
NU held Virginia to 44.4 percent (12-27) shooting, including 4-of-9 threes. The Cavaliers hit 5-of-10 free throws. The Huskers also won the first-half turnover battle, 8-6. Paris Clark led UVA with eight points and five assists in the half, while Romy Levy contributed seven points and four assists. The Cavs also got five points apiece off the bench from Raiane Dias Dos Santos and Adeang Ring.
Weaver ignited Nebraska's separation early in the third quarter, hitting a season-high three three-pointers in a 2:45 span to open the period and give the Big Red a 53-36 lead.

Ekeler Nominated for 2025 Broyles Award
Nebraska special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler was tabbed as one of 63 nominees for the 2025 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coach.
Ekeler has made dramatic improvements across Nebraska’s special teams units this season. The Huskers currently rank fourth nationally in kickoff returns average (28.9) and 17th in punt return average (17.6), as one of four programs in the top 20 nationally in both areas. Kenneth Williams leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth nationally in kickoff returns average while Jacory Barney is 15th nationally in punt returns average.
The Huskers also rank in the top 35 nationally in blocked kicks (seventh, three), kickoff return defense (11th, 16.1 ypr) and punt return average defense (35th, 5.50 ypr). Ekeler has also developed a pair of first-year starters at the specialist spots as Kyle Cunanan is 13-of-16 in field goals and connected on all 42 PATs while Archie Wilson has placed 12 of his 28 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line and allowed just four punt returns all season.
The Broyles Award selection committee is made up of former hall of fame coaches, members of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), and legendary broadcasters. The selection committee will vote to advance 15 semifinalists, five finalists, and one overall winner.

Frager Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week
The Big Ten Conference announced Monday afternoon that Braden Frager was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Frager averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game while shooting 72 percent from the field, including 55 percent from 3-point range, in helping Nebraska to a 2-0 week. The Lincoln Southwest product was chosen as the MVP of the Hall of Fame Classic for his performance in helping the Huskers to a 6-0 start.
In the championship game against Kansas State, Frager had 16 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench in NU’s 86-85 win. He posted his second 20-point game of the season in the first-round win over New Mexico, finishing with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.
Frager is the first Husker freshman to earn the weekly award since Jamarques Lawrence in March of 2023.
