UPDATE: Jefferson County Sheriff Nick Georgi says the two dogs that attacked a 7-year-old girl in Fairbury on Monday will eventually be euthanized, at the request of the dogs' owners.

"Once the mandatory quarantine period is up both dogs will be euthanized per the owners' request," Georgi said in an email Wednesday afternoon. "An appointment has already been made and once the mandatory quarantine is up the dogs will be transported to a vet by the Fairbury City Ordinance Officer."

FAIRBURY, Neb. — A 7-year-old girl is recovering from very serious injuries after being attacked by two dogs Monday afternoon in Fairbury.

The Jefferson County 911 Center got the call just after 4 o’clock about a child being attacked in the 1500 block of H Street. Investigators said the girl was riding her bicycle when one dog, unprovoked, attacked.

A neighbor saw what was happening and immediately tried to pull the dog off. That’s when a second dog, owned by the same person, began biting the neighbor.

A Fairbury city ordinance officer happened to be driving by at the time and jumped in to help. Together with the child’s mother and the neighbor, they were able to stop the attack.

All three — the child, her mother, and the neighbor — suffered injuries. The Jefferson County Ambulance responded, giving immediate medical aid. The girl was first taken to Jefferson Community Health and Life, then flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Omaha with very serious injuries.

Both dogs were captured and are being held for the required observation period. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Fairbury City Ordinance officers are investigating.
