NORFOLK, NEB.- After years of planning, a Northeast Nebraska natural resources district is coming closer to a project that could solve a long-standing flooding issue.

In the town of Battle Creek, the Lower Elk Horn Natural Resources District will hold an open house on Wednesday to hear the public’s input about possible options for flood damage mitigation.

“And so what we’re looking at potently is a man structure up in the watershed, and then a levee structure around the community of Battle Creek,” says NDR Assistant General Manager Curt Becker.

The goal of the dam and levee is to lower the likelihood of flooding, which would remove Battle Creek from being designated as a flood-prone area by FEMA.

But even after the open house, completion of the flood prevention projects could take years to complete.

“ If everything went smooth and no Issues no hiccups no delays best case scenario is five years,” Says Becker.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Battle Creek Jr/Sr High School input
