Hastings resident Mary Ann McDermott Dobrovolny, 84, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2025, at Tiffany Square Care Center, Grand Island, NE.

 

Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 16, at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings with Father Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Monday, June 16, at the funeral home with family present from 6-7:30 p.m., and one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Hastings Catholic Schools. The Mass of Christian Burial will be live-streamed on Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home’s website. Mary Ann met her spouse John of 60 years at Creighton University while both were students. Together, they have significantly contributed to the civic and Catholic community in Hastings. As a long-term member of St Michael’s Catholic Church since 1971, Mary Ann was active in the Altar Society and Catholic Daughters. As a professional librarian, she worked at Hastings Catholic Schools and Hastings College. In her spare time, while raising three children and delighting in seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, she enjoyed playing Bridge and pursuing her Irish roots through genealogy and travels to Ireland.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Cecilia Wickham McDermott; step-mother, Loretta Menzies McDermott; brother, Nick McDermott and granddaughter, Raelynn Karabel Dobrovolny.

Survivors include her husband, John; children, Joe (Pam) Dobrovolny of Elkhorn, NE, Steve (Betty) Dobrovolny of Hastings, NE, and Mary Kay Dobrovolny RSM of Bradley Beach, NJ; sister, Pat McDermott RSM of Dallas, PA; grandchildren, Dustin (Cassie) Dobrovolny of Hastings, NE, Michelle Dobrovolny of Phoenix, AZ, Kurtis Dobrovolny of Kearney, NE, Jacob (Hannah) Dobrovolny of Grand Island, NE, Zachary (Dana) Dobrovolny of Omaha, NE, and Catelynn Dobrovolny of Hastings, NE; in addition to great-grandchildren, siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many other loved ones.
