NORFOLK, Neb. – The Zone Afterschool Program has relocated to the Norfolk Senior Center, sparking new opportunities for collaboration and enhanced learning experiences for students. Previously situated at 218 W. Braasch Ave., the move was driven by a desire to create a more welcoming environment.

"It has more of a home feeling than the warehouse feel over there," said Kimberly Powell, Executive Director of The Zone Afterschool Program. "We now have more space and greater opportunities for intergenerational programming, teaching our youth how to interact positively with our seniors."

The Zone is a free after-school program available to both homeschooled and public school students in grades 7-12. The program emphasizes one-on-one mentoring with a primary goal of providing a safe and supportive environment for all students.

"We want it to be a safe place, which encompasses many aspects," Powell explained. "This includes keeping them out of trouble, fostering respect among everyone, and ensuring everyone feels secure in a social setting. We are committed to working with them on all these fronts."

Beyond recreation, The Zone offers essential life skills and academic support. Students have access to homework assistance, financial literacy classes, and vocational training. The program also aims to connect students with potential career paths as they approach graduation. Additionally, The Zone provides dinner each evening, incorporating manners and etiquette lessons into the mealtime.

"My goal is to minimize their screen time as much as possible," Powell added. "I strongly emphasize recreation and outdoor activities."

The Zone Afterschool Program relies on community support, donations, and grants to sustain its operations and programming. By offering a range of engaging activities, the program aims to enrich the lives of its participants.
