UPDATE 2:00 p.m. 12/26:
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Authorities in Grand Island have identified the person who died in a Christmas morning hit-and-run accident.
A city news release says 19-year-old Thomas Villa-Estrada was speeding north on a residential road when 67-year-old Pedro Chavez Rodriguez turned south and their cars collided. Investigators say the speed of the crash caused Villa-Estrada’s car to travel more than 250 feet before it hit a tree. He died at the scene.
Police say Chavez Rodriguez fled the scene, but his license plate fell off his vehicle and gave officers a clue. They later arrested him and he admitted to leaving the scene.
Police are still investigating the crash.
