State championship coach Kevin Scheef resigns from Wahoo
WAHOO, Neb. — The coach of the defending Class C-1 boys basketball champions has resigned without coaching a game this season.
News Channel Nebraska first reported Wahoo head coach Kevin Scheef's absence last week. At the time, superintendent Brandon Lavaley said Scheef’s future was undetermined and called it a “personnel matter.”
Lavaley confirmed to NCN that the Wahoo Public Schools Board of Education accepted Scheef's resignation from teaching and extracurricular assignments on Monday. Scheef responded to NCN over text on Thursday. He confirmed his resignation but said he isn't able to share more details.
Scheef has been the head coach for the Warriors for the past 23 seasons. He has guided his team to three state titles, including the C-1 championship last season. Wahoo’s success earned Scheef the Omaha World-Herald Coach of the Year honor. He is listed on the Wahoo High School website as a business and technology teacher.
The World-Herald reports that junior varsity coach Mike Bomar is serving as interim coach.
