Scheef not coaching to start Wahoo’s season, district calls it ‘personnel matter’
WAHOO, Neb. — The defending Class C-1 boys state basketball champions are without a familiar face on their bench to start this season.
Head coach Kevin Scheef was not at Wahoo’s first two games. Superintendent Brandon Lavaley told News Channel Nebraska that it is still undetermined if Scheef will coach Wahoo’s game Tuesday night or if he will return as head coach at all. Lavaley confirmed Scheef is still employed by the district but said he couldn’t comment further because the situation is a personnel matter. He did not give a timeline on when the situation might be resolved.
Scheef has been the head coach for the Warriors for the past 23 seasons. He has guided his team to three state titles, including the C-1 championship last season. Wahoo’s success earned Scheef the Omaha World-Herald Coach of the Year honor.
Wahoo is 1-1 to start the season with a win over Aurora and an overtime loss to Bennington. The Warriors are scheduled to play Norris on Tuesday night and at Wayne on Friday. The game at Wayne will be televised on News Channel Nebraska.
