Arla was born October 23, 1930, in Chester, SD, to Elvin and Anna Brown. After moving from the farm near Chester to Madison, SD, Arla graduated from General Beadle High School in 1950. She worked at the dime store and later at the Lake County Treasurer’s Office. Arla met Darrell Herringer and they were united in marriage on September 28, 1958. They welcomed five children into the world - Kim, Jay, Amy, Jon, and Kay. In December 1966, the family moved from Madison to Hastings, NE, for Darrell’s job where they bought their first home and remained there for almost 58 years. Arla also worked for the Hastings Tribune putting ads in the newspapers for a few years. Darrell passed away in 2018 after 59 years of marriage. Arla enjoyed her annual summer vacations going back to South Dakota to visit her three brothers and families, having a garden and canning in her younger years, playing Yahtzee and dice games, and taking care of her family. Arla and Darrell also enjoyed going to garage sales. With her five children from oldest to youngest just four years and 10 months apart, she was a busy mom.

Arla was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darrell; grandson, Nicholas Herringer; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Arvid (Aleta) Brown, Vern (Ruth) Brown, and Elvin (Donna) Brown, Jr.

She is survived by her sons, Kim (Donette) Herringer, Jay (Tammy) Herringer, and Jon Herringer; and daughters, Amy (John) Brommer and Kay (Mike) Mann; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Linda (Ron) Hiller; and many nieces and nephews.
