Kahmann’s record-setting day spoils UNK football’s upset bid
KEARNEY, Neb. — The Nebraska Kearney football team held a fourth-quarter lead but couldn’t contain Emporia State’s Tyler Kahmann on the way to a 42-35 loss.
Kahmann hauled in 19 receptions for 296 yards and five touchdowns. The yardage total is a new Emporia State record and the touchdown total ties the school record. His third touchdown catch made him the MIAA’s new career receiving touchdown record holder.
The Lopers (4-4) took advantage of good field position from a Hornets (7-1) interception to take a 7-0 lead. Emporia, the #14 team in the country, didn’t score until 9:51 left in the first half, but then the Hornets’ offense found its stride and took a 20-14 lead at halftime.
The teams traded scores throughout the second half. The Lopers appeared to have the edge after an interception with 5:52 left in the fourth quarter. UNK owned a one-point lead and had the football and good field position but Jadarrius Thomas fumbled on the next play to give the ball back to Emporia. The Hornets scored on the ensuing possession to make it 42-35.
UNK is on the road the next two weeks before returning to Cope Stadium to host Fort Hays State in the season finale. The Nov. 16 game will be televised on News Channel Nebraska.
