UPDATE: Taco John's in Kearney victim of early morning fire
KEARNEY, Neb. – Nobody is hurt but a restaurant is destroyed after an overnight fire in Kearney.
A news release says a Kearney police officer responded to Taco John’s on E 25th St. around 1:50 Wednesday morning for a security alarm. The officer noticed smoke and called the fire department.
When firefighters arrived, the release says they found heavy smoke and searched for the fire and anyone inside. The incident commander noticed flames coming from the roof and evacuated the building because of safety concerns.
Crews fought the fire from outside and deemed it under control around 5:15, nearly 3.5 hours after the initial alarm.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating what caused the fire.
The southernmost eastbound lane of 25th St. remains closed from as does Avenue E between 24th and 25th Streets.
The restaurant is one block east of the 98.9 The Vibe and ESPN Tri-Cities radio station building, which was unharmed in the fire.
The morning crew from the radio station captured the scene in the video above around 5:00 a.m. Heavy amounts of debris can be seen in the parking lot, and several windows were blown out on the building.
