HASTINGS, Neb. — The teenage girl receiving treatment after being rescued from a Hastings pool has died at an Omaha hospital.
The Hastings International Exchange Organization made the announcement Sunday night. A news release says the 13-year-old from Ozu, Japan died at 12:38 a.m. Sunday at Children’s in Omaha. The girl was in Hastings on a student exchange visit. The coordinating group expressed its deep condolences to the girl’s family and friends.
“We also hope that citizens of Ozu, including the students who traveled to Hastings, and those who witnessed the events can find the strength to heal from this tragedy.”
The incident happened just before 2:00 Wednesday afternoon at the Hastings Aquacourt. City officials say the girl moved from the shallow end of the pool to the deep end, went under the water and didn’t resurface. A lifeguard pulled the unconscious teen from the water and began life-saving measures. An ambulance transported her to a local hospital in critical condition and a medical helicopter later flew her to Children’s for further care.
The city decided to close the Aquacourt for the remainder of the season.
