GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – - One of the largest city parks in Grand Island is getting some much-needed improvements.
The city will be improving the George Park baseball fields by re-grading the site, adding infield conditioner and reconstructing the irrigation and turf areas.
City council member Chuck Haase said the improvements at the field are important.
“Well, I think it shows good use of the food and beverage tax and the field that kept getting flooded at George Park has been needing this maintenance for a while," said Haase. "I’m just glad to see that we finally got it to fruition. It’ll have a better feel for the kids.”
The $136,054.68 project will be funded by food and beverage tax money. Odeys Inc. of Omaha will be in charge of the improvements.
According to the city, the fields are used by recreational and competitive teams for a variety of tournaments. Officials say that out of all the city fields, the southwest George Park field has the highest rate of rainouts because it does not drain properly.
With the improvements, the city hopes to reduce the numbers of rainouts, improve safety and save staff time when preparing fields.
The project is set to start next week and it is expected to last two weeks.
