Severe thunderstorm leads to flooding in Kearney

City streets are draining after a severe thunderstorm caused minor flooding in Kearney.

KEARNEY, Neb. — City streets are draining after a severe thunderstorm caused minor flooding in Kearney.

The National Weather Service first issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Kearney around 7:50 Friday night. The warning remained in place until 9:00 p.m. The NWS issued a tornado warning for rural parts of eastern Buffalo County at 7:30 p.m.

The NWS observation site at the Kearney Municipal Airport logged 0.75 inches of rain and a peak wind gust of 45 mph on Friday night.

The heavy rain fell over a short period of time, leading to flooding downtown and in other high-traffic areas of central Kearney. Most of Buffalo County is in a flood advisory until 1:00 Saturday morning.

Officials encourage people to turn around, don`t drown when encountering flooded roads.
