COLUMBUS, Neb. — The Kearney Catholic boys golf team won a competitive, shortened tournament to become Class C state champions for the second consecutive season.

Extreme weather canceled the first day of competition at the Elks County Club in Columbus and delayed the start of Wednesday’s 18-hole round. The top four Stars golfers shot a combined score of 322, or +34, to beat Scotus Central Catholic by one stroke.

Nash Malone posted the top score for Kearney Catholic. He shot a +1 73 to tie Sam Wells of St. Paul for the best round at the tournament. He lost a one-hold playoff to the Wildcat to finish second.

The team championship follows last year’s title, which was the first in program history. Impressively, the Stars did it with exclusively sophomores and juniors on the varsity roster.

Kearney Catholic results:

Nash Malone +1

Tate Redinger +6

Jackson Dunham +7

Will Hogeland +20

Cale Krohn +20
