GRAND ISLAND, Neb.-- The home field for Grand Island baseball programs might soon get a renovation.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, members heard from the Grand Island Baseball Committee. The group has been working to develop a plan to renovate the baseball field at Ryder Park. The field is home to the Grand Island High School baseball team and the local American Legion baseball program during the summer months.

Grand Island community baseball committee president Clint Ruether says it would be a great addition to the community.

“Really what we want to do is to create a facility that is first class in the state of Nebraska that our community can be proud of when you’re driving down the street at night and you see Ryder park lights on that you say ‘wow that place is amazing’ for our kids today and for the next 30 to 50 years at something that we think that has to happen,” said Ruether.

The renovation plans include installing an artificial turf field, new concession stand facility, bathrooms, new lights, bleachers, scoreboards, and more.

The estimated cost of the proposed improvements is $5 million. The committee hopes to raise $1.75 million and is asking the city for $3.25 million. The council is yet to approve of the proposed renovation. The council members expect to vote on the proposal at a future meeting.
