GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- More than a thousand homes in a central Nebraska city will be receiving lead service line replacements without a cost.

In a news release on Wednesday, the city of Grand Island announced that approximately 3,000 homes throughout the city will receive lead service line replacements for free.

The Grand Island Utilities Department is currently in the discovery stage of a project that will replace the lead service lines throughout the city for the next 10 years. The department has until Oct. 16 to put together a full inventory of lead and galvanized service lines.

The funding to support the project comes from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act distributed by the Nebraska Drinking Water State Revolving Fund grant program. The city said the line replacement could cost anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000 but will be free of charge due to the funding.

Officials said impacted property owners will receive a letter and a door hanger notifying them of the expected project.
