GRAND ISLAND, NEB. — A familiar face that has been with Grand Island Public Schools for 14 years has been tabbed to lead activities at Grand Island Senior High.

GISH has named Chris Ladwig the new activities director and he will assume the role this summer. Ladwig has been with Grand Island Public Schools since 2010.

The announcement comes after long-time administrator, coach, and activities director Cindy Wells announced her retirement at the end of this school year.

Ladwig has most recently served as the GISH Assistant Activities Director in a part-time capacity, along with teaching, since 2010.  He moved to serving as Assistant A.D. in a full-time capacity starting in 2022.

Ladwig was also named the Nebraska State Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NSIAAA) Assistant Athletic Director of the year for the 2022-23 school year. Prior to serving as Assistant A.D. Ladwig has taught PE, Health, and Freshman Seminar at the elementary and high school levels.

In a statement, Ladwig expressed his excitement to lead the GISH Activities Department.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve as the next Activities Director.” Ladwig said, “I would like to thank the committee for this opportunity. I am committed to continue building the Islander brand for our students, teachers, and coaches. I have had the pleasure to learn from Mrs. Wells and am excited to continue the rich tradition of Grand Island Senior High Activities.”

GIPS Superintendent Matt Fisher affirmed the hire.

“We are excited to have Mr. Ladwig move into this position.” Fisher shard, “After having the chance to work side-by-side with Mrs. Wells for a number of years, we know he is well prepared to step in and lead in this role.”
