Former Husker football player meets dispatcher after life-saving phone call

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Calling 911 can be a frenzied experience, and a calm voice on the other end of the line can make all the difference.
When former Husker football player Demoine Adams collapsed, his wife Fara called 911. With the help of the dispatcher, she was able to keep him alive.
On Wednesday, Demoine and Fara got to meet the voice behind the call that guided her to step in and perform CPR while waiting for the paramedics to arrive.
“They say teamwork makes the dream work, but sometimes in this case, teamwork makes the life continue to work,” said Demoine.
A couple weeks ago, Fara found Demoine passed out on the floor in the middle of the night.
“He was not responsive, and I knew something was wrong, so I called 911, they answered right away,” said Fara.
Dispatcher Joey Mims picked up the phone and after assessing Demonie’s state, he walked Fara through how to do CPR.
“I’m an occupational therapist at Madonna, and I have never had to do CPR. The first time I did it was on my husband, so that was very emotional,” said Fara.
“He did become conscious before LFR arrived and upon their arrival he was upright and breathing,” said Fara.
Fara’s CPR kept him alive until first responders got there, then Demoine was rushed to Bryan Hospital. They later found out he had a small blood clot on his lungs.
“It was very unreal that this was happening to my loved one right in front of me and I would be the one to try to do something to stop it,” said Fara.
The 43-year-old former athlete has always been healthy and never expected this, and for him to meet one of the people who helped keep him alive means everything.
“All of the individuals that are in the people business serving others, it is a business that goes unthanked,” said Demoine.
