HASTINGS, Neb.- A well-known breakfast spot in Hastings is saying goodbye.

After 26 years, The Goldenrod Cafe is closing its doors to the public. Tuesday was its last day of business.

“Oh, it’s sad, it’s sad. I love doing it. I love serving the people," Nancy Bosle said.

Owner Nancy Bosle isn't from the area but moved to Hastings to take care of her dad when he got sick. He inspired her to start the cafe.

“I decided that, my dad always wanted a little cafe and this came open. I was dating a guy here in town and so I got the cafe, we got married and had a child and just had a nice life,” Bosle said.

On September 25, 1997, The Goldenrod Cafe opened its doors. Bosle named it after Nebraska's state flower. She wanted to provide as much home cooking as comfort food. Customers say they're going to miss it.

“I have been coming here for at least 16 years since I had to quit working and the food is delicious, and everybody was so good to me so it's really going to miss it,” said Kay Hecke.

“I'm going to miss the Goldenrod cafe. I have been coming here for twice a day for over 20 years,” one customer said.

Twice a day? Why?

"I come in for coffee in the afternoon and breakfast in the morning."

What made it so special?  “The people and the food.”

Bosle says she had been trying to keep the cafe open because people loved it. But because of health issues and a shortage of staff she decided it was time.

“Yeah, we’re going to miss them too, but there wasn’t anything else I could do,” Bosle said.

Employees will also miss the customers and their boss.

“I feel really sad because Nancy is a good boss... I’m going to miss all the good customers," Helen Richard said.

“Just the people boss always love the kitchen and the boss took a chance on a wild child these last 25 years," one employee said.

How do you feel about today?

“I think it will hit when I get home."

“I’ve had wonderful customers, just wonderful, very rarely have I had any problems," Bosle said. "It was a good thing to serve the public, especially this public."

Bosle isn’t going anywhere. She says soon she will start another business.
