GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Two teens from Grand Island have been cited after setting fire to a playground.

According to police, they responded to Newell Elementary School because of a fire at around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

According to reports, fire had been intentionally set and it caused the destruction of the entire playground.

In a press release GIPS said they were alerted of a smoking fire and the Grand Island Police Department and the Grand Island Fire Department arrived quickly and resolved the situation within minutes. 

GIPS said the playground has experienced extensive damage, but there is no damage to the school and no one was harmed. 

According to our news partner KSBN Local 4 police said that the teens put fire tinder underneath the playground structure, where the rubber chips are and lit it on fire.

Our news partner KSNB Local 4 reported the estimated cost of the loss is about $75,000, and the teens are going to appear in front of a county judge for arraignment and will likely have to pay restitution. 

The 15-year-old and a 16-year-old have been identified and cited for criminal mischief.
