SUTTON, Neb. -- For the first time in its 10-year history, the Broadway Academy in Sutton is doing a complete show.

The academy usually holds a summer camp where high school kids interested in theater meet up for a week.

Throughout the week, students have the guidance of professional New York performers, vocal coaches and one-on-one coaching sessions to better their skills.

This year, Broadway Academy Artistic Director Taylor Eliason thought it would be great to do a complete show for the first time ever, before camp starts.

“So, we were like, well we could do a show about kids and use the kids we know and hopefully get the community members to come and audition,” he said.

The cast is made up of 15 people from all over Nebraska. They have been rehearsing "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” musical for more than a month.

Eliason said he can’t wait.

“Got these incredibly talented kids, they are, it’s going to be a great show. I’m excited about it,” Eliason said.

Opening night will be on Wednesday at the Bartholomew Performing Arts Center in York. Two more shows will be July 13 and 14 at the Allegro Wolf Arts Center in Sutton.

Eliason said he hopes that kids become better storytellers throughout the art of theater.

“I really value the theater as act of compassion," he said. "I think that’s what it is at the heart of it, it’s like an important exercise in putting yourself in someone else’s shoes so entirely that you almost forget who you are and anything you feel or think or belief and become this other person entirely."

The Broadway Academy will be holding its annual weeklong camp from July 16 to the 23 and there are still some spots available.
