KEARNEY, Neb. — Things are returning to normal at a Kearney manufacturing plant after a fire forced the evacuation of the facility.

The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire call at Eaton Corporation around 6:00 Wednesday night. A news release says firefighters found heavy black smoke coming from the roof and exterior doors of the west side of the facility. Crews found the fire and extinguished it.

Additional firefighters used a ladder truck to determine the fire hadn’t extended to the roof.

The release says that, prior to the fire department’s arrival, Eaton employees attempted to extinguish the fire but were forced to evacuate when conditions deteriorated. Two workers were evaluated for smoke inhalation at the scene but no other injuries were reported.

According to the release, the initial investigation indicates the fire started in a seat grinder and spread to a mist collector. The fire was mostly contained to the area of the two machines.

The plant produces engine valves and gears for automotive manufacturers and employs nearly 600 people.
