Pierce senior overcomes ACL Injury, defies odds to claim trio of state championships
PIERCE, Neb. -- Dawson Raabe’s junior sports season was cut short. He suffered an ACL injury in the middle of the year while wrestling for the Pierce Blue Jays.
Following the injury, the multi-sport athlete was determined to get back to competing for his final year of high school.
Raabe made a speedy recovery, defying expectations by recovering in just five months, and returning to the football field as a Defensive Tackle for the Blue Jays last fall. The team went on to claim the Class C state title.
"After blowing my knee out...I never imagined it," he said. "I never even thought I would get a football season."
Then in the winter season, Raabe transitioned to the wrestling mat. Overcoming any lingering apprehensions, he showcased his skills and clinched the Class C heavyweight state title.
He continued his winning streak into the spring season. He shattered the school's discus throw record and emerged triumphant at the state level, securing yet another state title in the Class C division.
Raabe completed the trifecta, joining an extremely short and prestigious list of athletes who won three different Nebraska state championships in just one school year.
"It feels amazing," he said. "The support from the community has been unlike any other."
Raabe said he’ll cherish all the memories from his improbable season and high school athletic career.
"I'll miss most the comradery with my teammates," he said. "It was all fun and games in the end."
Raabe plans to play football for Sioux Falls next school year.
