HASTINGS, Neb. — Authorities are releasing more details about the crash that claimed two lives in Hastings on Thursday.

A city news release says 61-year-old Douglas Kelly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was driving a Ram 1500 pickup that crashed into the back of a Ford Focus driven by 67-year-old Gilberto Zuniga-Cirila of Grand Island. The collision propelled the car onto a terrace, where it collided with other objects.

Two passengers in the car, 61-year-old Natividad Zuniga and 45-year-old Graciano Nava Zuniga, both of Grand Island, died at the scene. Kelly along with Zuniga-Cirila were transported to Mary Lanning Healthcare in stable condition. Another passenger in the car, 55-year-old Guadalupe Zuniga-Cirila, was taken to Bryan West Medical Center in Lincoln and is in critical condition.

The news release says the Hastings Police Department is leading the investigation into the crash and the Nebraska State Patrol is assisting with the accident reconstruction.

The accident happened around 6:30 Thursday night in the 600 block of N. Burlington Ave. Traffic was closed off for about three hours and the crash knocked out power in the area for two hours.
