CCC-Hastings students win heavy equipment scholarship
HASTINGS, Neb. – Two students in the Heavy Equipment Operator Technical program at Central Community College-Hastings have been presented with the Jim DeBord Scholarship.
Nate Mehling of Scottsbluff and Brock Poppe of Ogallala each received a $1,000 scholarship to assist them financially in their educational pursuits.
“I think it’s a great thing for (the DeBord family) to do,” said Mehling. “It is going to help a lot in paying my college bills.”
Ron and Tammy DeBord established the scholarship in 2020 in honor of Ron’s father, Jim, who worked in the heavy equipment field for more than three decades. Jim and Ron attended this year’s scholarship presentation along with Jim’s grandson, Nolan.
“I really appreciate the scholarship,” Poppe said. “Hopefully, I can take my career a long way and do my own thing in the future or become part of running a company.”
Both Mehling and Poppe will graduate in May. Mehling said he plans to return to Scottsbluff to work while Poppe said he plans to relocate to Lincoln to work in land clearing or excavation.
