Grand Island officials present draft study for input from public
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- City officials talked about plans for changes to a Grand Island railroad crossing.
The City of Grand Island in coordination with the Nebraska Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration held a meeting to inform the public about its plans and draft study.
The study is evaluating options for the Broadwell Ave. at-grade crossing north of Third St.
According to officials involved, the need for the project is primarily based on the potential of train-vehicle collisions. There have been 21 collisions between 2015 and 2019 and only one was a train-vehicle collision.
Four different alternatives were presented to the public. To qualify for state funding assistance, all alternatives would include the closure of a second at-grade crossing.
The crossings that are being considered are Blaine St./Custer Ave., Lincoln Ave., Walnut St., Pine St. and Oak St.
Officials are hoping for the public’s feedback, and they said the study should be finalized by May.
The construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2028.
