KEARNEY, Neb. — The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association is actively seeking expansion.

MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy joined the Doug & Daddy Show on ESPN Tri-Cities on Wednesday. He says the conference’s member school presidents have discussed growing as large as 20 schools over the next few years. The MIAA, which includes Nebraska Kearney, has 14 schools, 12 of which play football.

“In all three divisions of the NCAA there’s a thought that bigger is better. I think that’s certainly where we’re at in the MIAA,” Racy said.

Racy says the conference could release information about possible expansion three to six months from now. He says multiple institutions have already shown interest in joining.

“We certainly look first to institutions in our current footprint - with football or without football," Racy said. "There may be a day where we need to move into different states, new states and continue to grow the MIAA.”

The MIAA has played a conference-only football schedule since 2013, which some thinks hurts the league’s chances of getting more teams into the Division ll playoffs. Possible expansion could be a factor in creating divisions and allowing non-conference games again.

“You’re going to see a schedule that would have those early season, non-conference opponents," Racy said. "Again, I don’t know if that happens in two years or three years, but I do think there’s momentum to move in that direction.”

School presidents will soon meet at the NCAA convention, which starts January 11th.
