Proponents discuss Amendment 1 on November ballot
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. - Nebraska voters could amend the state constitution this November.
As part of their statewide tour, several Nebraska politicians made a stop in Grand Island to spread the word about why they think it’s important to pass Amendment 1.
State Sen. Eliot Bostar sponsored the legislative resolution that placed the proposed amendment on the ballot. He says the measure put forward in the Legislature was passed unanimously, which doesn’t happen very often.
“Amendment 1 would narrowly change the state’s constitution to fix a provision that is currently making Nebraska uncompetitive when compared to the rest of the country," Bostar said. "Nebraska is the only state currently that doesn’t have access to all of the tools necessary to attract and develop commercial air service”.
If approved by majority of Nebraska voters, Amendment 1 would allow communities throughout the state to grow the number of flights their airports offer, which Bostar said would have a positive effect on local economies. Supporters in the Legislature said this would benefit urban and rural communities alike, and would facilitate economic development and expand consumer choice.
“The State Legislature can only put it on the ballot. We do not have the power to change the state’s constitution. Only the public does," Bostar said. "So now that it is on the ballot, we need the public. We need the voters in Nebraska to make sure that they are voting for Amendment 1 on their ballot this November”.
