KPD arrests 19-year-old reportedly connected to deadly January incident on unrelated charges

KEARNEY, Neb. -- A 19-year-old reportedly connected to an incident in which one person died has been arrested on charges unrelated to the January homicide.
Kearney Police investigators said Wednesday that they continue to compile forensic, digital and physical evidence and conduct interviews in the homicide and attempted robbery which occurred Jan. 16.
An arrest warrant was recently obtained for 19-year-old Zachary R. Walker, 19 of Kearney, who was arrested without incident on Tuesday.
Walker remains in custody at the Buffalo County Jail on five counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, Possession of a Defaced Firearm, and Possession of a Controlled Substance, all of which are felonies.
On Sunday, January 16, 2022, KPD responded to the 800 block of W. 23rd Street to investigate a report of gunshots in the area. One person was killed and two other subjects had been shot in an attempted robbery, officers said.
The victim was identified as Jared M. Shinpaugh,31, of Lexington. One victim, identified as Joseph Garcia, 29, of Lexington, was treated and released at Good Samaritan Hospital for a gunshot wound.
It was later discovered that a resident, 18-year-old Joshua Morris of Kearney, was also shot during the
attempted robbery.
Police are still attempting to locate 24-year-old Romeo Chambers after a felony arrest warrant was issued in March for multiple charges including Second-Degree Murder.
