Leyton student starts petition to get volleyball coach her job back
Jodi Craig has coached multiple all star teams and has taken Leyton to seven state tournaments in 22 years coaching volleyball at the school.
Now, she’s no longer the head coach. She is also not the track coach or school's National Honor Society sponsor anymore. Her players and students want to know why.
"We just all kind of found out in a really weird way," Leyton High School senior and volleyball player Sage Rummel said. "We were all at school and suddenly there was a rumor going around that said she can't coach, she can't be track coach. I'm like 'What the heck?' and then I learned from my cousin that it was actually true."
Leyton Volleyball player Sage Rummel started a petition Thursday on the subject. It had 500 signatures in 24 hours and now sits just shy of 600.
"Obviously everyone agrees that coach Craig is an amazing coach, she's an amazing person," Rummel said. "We all agree that she should get her job back."
Rummel said there are other area volleyball coaches that have signed and voiced support for Craig on the petition.
Rummel also claiming in the petition Craig was “unwillingly stripped” of her position.
"She always follows rules," Rummel said. "She just always supports everyone in our community. She does everything for us kids."
She says the worst part is not hearing the news from Craig herself.
"It's really heartbreaking because she's been my coach since the first grade and that was many years ago," Rummel said. "I love her with my whole heart and with her not being able to come and tell me personally, that really affected me."
News Channel Nebraska reached out to Leyton superintendent Chris Geary on the subject. He declined to comment, saying it was a confidential personnel matter. It is unclear why Craig was removed from her extra-curricular positions.
The petition is just one step of Rummel’s plan to get her coach back on the court with the Leyton volleyball team. She’s going to the Leyton school board meeting next week to address them and Geary in person.
If Craig doesn't end up back on the court with her team, some of the players might not go back onto the court either.
"I've heard from many people that they will not play," Rummel said. "Personally, I am one of those people. Coach Craig has been my coach forever and I don't want to say I feel like I'd be betraying her, but I don't want to start all over in my volleyball career with a new coach."
