Revamping Sertomaland: A new inclusive playground for Columbus
COLUMBUS, Neb. -- A community playground in Columbus is getting a much-needed makeover! The Sertomaland playground has seen better days, and due to its age, replacement parts are no longer available. But there's good news ahead! The entire structure will be replaced and transformed into an inclusive space for all children.
“It will have a number of things to include all kids wanting to play and have fun, but it will be very inclusive for those with disabilities,” said Columbus Parks and Recreation Director Betsy Eckhardt. “We will have musical pieces for those musically inclined. I am really excited about the 360 bridge and how it will act as a swing for kids in wheelchairs or on crutches.”
“There will also be a 360 loop. This will give kids who might only have strength in their arms or have limited strength in their legs to get themselves to the top of a slide structure, and take the slide down. It works like a conveyor belt to help an individual up to the top without having to navigate stairs.”
The city has been selected to receive a $215,606 grant through the Land and Water Conservation Fund to replace the Sertomaland playground in East Pawnee Park.
The Columbus Parks and Recreation Board hopes to break ground in fall 2025. This new playground will feature poured-in-place surfacing, ensuring that youth and people of all abilities can access every part.
