Paxton senior wins national Heart of the Arts Award

PAXTON, Neb.- A Nebraska High School Senior is being nationally recognized for her resilience in the face of adversity.
Eden Coppersmith, of Paxton High School, was selected by The National Federation of State High School Associations NFHS as the 2025 Heart of the Arts Award winner. NFHS said Coppersmith exemplifies the ideals of the positive heart of the arts and represents the core mission of education-based activities.
Coppersmith was born with selective mutism and Spina Bifida which made her young life challenging. According to a NFHS news release, she felt very isolated being “the girl in the wheelchair who doesn’t talk.”
She spoke very little growing up- sometimes only a few words a year. Coppersmith didn't let this stop her from joining the arts and other activities including the School's speech team.
Coppersmith didn't say a word during her first two speech meets. That changed at the next one, and from that point on Eden would talk more and more, eventually placing at meets and inspiring others.
After consistent effort, Eden’s confidence grew and she continued to find her voice.
She is the first-ever Nebraskan to win the Heart of the Arts Award.
The NSAA will honor Eden at the NSAA Speech Championships on Friday, March 28.
