VALENTINE, Neb. - A data breach affecting PowerSchool, the largest cloud-based education software provider for K-12 schools in the U.S., was discussed at Thursday's Valentine School Board meeting.

Superintendent Mike Halley informed board members about the breach, which could impact current and former students, as well as parents.

“Right now they’re researching who all has been impacted by the breach, and then they’ll let them know,” said Halley. “PowerSchool will be reaching out to those affected.”

PowerSchool, which supports more than 60 million students worldwide, reported becoming aware of the potential cybersecurity incident on Dec. 28. The company assured users that it has taken appropriate steps to address the issue and does not anticipate the compromised data being shared publicly.

“It’s unfortunate, but it’s the world we’re living in. It’s good they caught it right away,” said Halley.

Halley added that PowerSchool plans to offer those affected resources to monitor their credit reports and other protective options.
