LEXINGTON, Neb. — A Central Nebraska teenager has died after an accident involving car surfing.

The Lexington Police Department says it happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Cherokee Road, which is in a residential area on the north edge of town. A news release says a 14-year-old was driving a vehicle with a 13-year-old passenger. A 16-year-old boy was lying on the hood of the car when the driver hit the brakes, thinking a different vehicle was backing out of a driveway. The boy on the hood fell backwards off the car and hit his head on the concrete street.

An ambulance transported the boy to a local hospital. A medical helicopter later flew him to a Kearney hospital where he died on Monday.

Police say they aren’t releasing the names of those involved. The investigation is ongoing.

The release says the group had been car surfing, which the CDC defines as a person riding on the exterior of a vehicle while someone else drives it.
