BROKEN BOW, Neb. (KNOP) - A Broken Bow man was arrested after his 15-day-old baby was transported to the Children’s Hospital in Omaha with severe injuries.

Adam Schaefer, 30, was arrested after Sergeant Chris Henderson was called to the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Center in Broken Bow for an infant with a head injury on Sept. 29.

The baby was suffering from extensive bruising, acute subdural hematoma, left parietal with extra hemisphere fissure, extra axial hematoma and a right parietal skull fracture, according to court documents. He was later transported to the Children’s Hospital in Omaha for further treatment.

The Broken Bow Police Department said that Schaefer reported to medical staff that his baby was injured when he tried to put him in his car seat and he hit his head on the car door, which threw his head back. A conducted scan from a radiologist did not match what Schaefer said happened, according to police.

Throughout investigation, police learned that Schaefer told a different story of what happened to his son to Department of Health and Human Services staff. Further assistance from a Nebraska State Patrol investigator revealed that Schaefer took his baby for a ride because he was fussy and when he was getting in the car, he held his baby, slapped him three times and threw him in his car in the backseat.

Schaefer was charged with committing child abuse intentionally with injury and false reporting.

His bond is set at 10% of $250,000. His prelim hearing is scheduled for Oct. 28 at 10 a.m.
