CENTRAL CITY, Neb. -- A mother is in jail after authorities say she left her baby unattended in a vehicle in 90-degree weather. 
 
According to the Merrick County Sherriff’s Office, deputies arrested 40-year-old Cara Dugan of Kearney on Saturday afternoon at the Merrick County Fairgrounds in Central City. A news release says Dugan left her three-month-old infant in a pickup with the engine off and the windows partially ajar.
 
Officials say a person walking by heard the baby crying and started searching vehicles to find it. Police say that Dugan was inside of a building riding a horse at the time. 
 
Law enforcement took the baby to a local hospital for evaluation. The infant wasn't injured and was placed in the custody of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services. 
 
Deputies booked Dugan in jail for felony child abuse.
