GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- In a school district that is over 54% Hispanic Latino, being bilingual is a big advantage.
At the moment, Bianca Ayala is the only bilingual principal at Grand Island Public Schools.
“Honestly, I was shocked because I’ve worked in other schools in Grand Island and they had higher diversity population and seeing the way that it has grown here in Gates, it’s become so handy,” said Ayala.
Ayala is a familiar face to GIPS. She was a student, taught at Howard Elementary and Barr Middle School and then served as an academic support coach. Now, she's the principal at Gates Elementary.
“I just can see the difference in the families of their comfortableness they’re not shy to ask for help," said Ayala. "They’re not shy to say I need Spanish and they can ask any questions.”
She was named principal last January but started her first full semester on Wednesday. According to last year’s numbers, 17% of Gates students are English learners and 40% are Hispanic students.
One of Ayala’s goals is to create a unified community among students, families and staff. She wants to make them feel welcome and also make school a great experience.
“Friday mornings if you drive by you will see me in an inflatable every Friday morning that’s how we’re going to greet students,” said Ayala.
The school will have more family nights and incentive days once students meet certain goals. The administration's hope is to build a school with a culture where students feel like they belong no matter what language they speak.
