GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- After many years of being understaffed, a central Nebraska police department is now fully staffed.

According to a news release by the city of Grand Island, the police department has all of its positions filled for the first time in eight years.

Grand Island Police Department Chief Kevin Denney said it was one of his priorities after being named chief less than two years ago.

“What’s a good milestone for the police department to reach to the full staffing although we are always gonna be looking for qualified applicants and growing the police department and building our momentum so that we can safely protect the community in the coming years,” said Denney.

Denney said this will allow for the department to provide full services to the community. Now, the city is looking to expand its police force by adding two officers next year. In the future, the department could add a specialized traffic unit.

A recruiting event is happening on Saturday from 10 to 2 p.m. at Amur Plaza.
