Grand Island Public Schools getting ready to cut personnel, budget

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- A central Nebraska school district is preparing for budget cuts.

Grand Island Public Schools has been considering staffing changes in an effort to reduce its budget.

According to Superintendent Matt Fisher, the district has until Apr. 15 to make decisions regarding teachers and administrators. 

“We had an intent form that was due, basically for our teachers to indicate whether they plan to come back for next year or not. Now that we have those intents, we’re going to basically go through those and figure out can we move this person from this position that’s being eliminated to another position that’s going to open up.”

He said he’s hoping that staff retiring or moving away will minimize how many positions the district needs to cut. Fisher said his goal is that the cuts won't be detrimental to students.

The Academies and Pathways model cut some of its programs including law, information technology and wielding back in December. Out of the district's $130 million budget, GIPS it's looking to cut $5 million.
