GRAND ISLAND, NE — The City of Kindness is feeling extra cheerful this week.

It’s Random Act of Kindness week in Grand Island. The city gave itself the positive moniker in 2002, but the Act of Kindness Ladies have been pushing the message for 25 years.

Chairwoman Kelly Henry says it doesn’t take much effort to be kind.

“Just even saying something nice to a coworker and maybe not being judgmental about a situation somebody might be in and just giving them a smile," Henry said. "So there’s many ways to be kind.”

The Grand Island Police are joining in. If someone commits a minor infraction this week, an officer might give them a pink “Act of Kindness Citation” instead of an actual ticket.

“I think all communities can use kindness," Capt. Jim Duering said. "I think police departments’ interactions with the community need a lift of kindness at times as well. This is just a great vehicle for us to do that with.”

On top of positive signs, the Act of Kindness Ladies donated hundreds of dollars worth of gift cards that are being passed out at random. They also read books about kindness at an elementary school, challenged the kids to document their good deeds and donated to local restaurants to randomly give out free food.

Henry says the acts of kindness end up benefiting both sides.

“You can’t feel bad about yourself when you’re doing something kind for others," Henry said. "It’s a great way to do something good and to feel really good about yourself.”
