GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Hall County Department of Corrections joined Central Community College’s criminal justice internship program for the first time this summer. Two students are on their fourth and final week as interns at Hall County Corrections.

Michael David, Criminal Justice Instructor at CCC, stated they have about 15 to 17 students within their overall internship program. Those students are working for various agencies throughout the state, but Hall County Corrections is brand new to this experience and David has high hopes that it continues as it’s been super successful.

The internship program is a part of students’ Capstone, which is required for them to graduate. David said the internship gives students the ability to understand what they’re going into, to see if they like it, and receive hands-on experience.

Quinn Webb, the Assistant Director at the jail and the man that brought the plan to CCC, emphasized this internship is great for their department, mostly because they are short-staffed, but it also gets students excited about a career in corrections.

“The nice thing is is that sometimes corrections kind of gets overlooked as a career and this gets them in to see hands-on, with the other officers, side by side, what they can be doing. Not only that, but to get them started as soon as they finish this, they can start their career right with us,” Webb expressed.

Usually, the age limit to work at Hall County Corrections is 21 but for the CCC internship, they’ve lowered it to 20. This way more people have the opportunity to participate in the program.
